The hardest site to build is the internal site. Requirements are gray, goals are a moving target, many have a stake and everyone has a viewpoint. This project was no different, but we’re happy with the result. It’s gotten us into doors previously closed and keeps people interested in the work we’re doing. Not much more we can ask from the little guy.

I’m often asked how we achive the mosaic effect when switching between pages on the site. The story goes that @rickybanister and I used to sit next to each other and argue/debate/experiment on this site all day. One of those days, we were working on scaling the images full screen. We had them pulling in large and in charge through Abode Flash’s bitmap class with smoothing enabled. We figured out that a 1000×700 jpeg at 70% compression stayed acceptably small in filesize but could resize with minimal artifacts. We started playing with smaller dimensions but they didn’t hold up as well. Jokingly we dropped it down to 50×35, loaded that in, and scaled it up full-browser. Super blurry – a no go – but it was only 2k. Then Rick wanted to see it without the smoothing. We toggled off the effect and it and there it was, a gorgeous mosaic pattern, full browser, in a fast loading 2k file. So that became out preloader. We first send the 50×35 file, scale it, then hold it there till the full 1000×700 file loads behind it.
